Amritpal Singh was born on January 17, 1993, in Jallupur Khera village which is located in the Baba Bakala tehsil of Amritsar district. Amritpal Singh grew up in a traditional Sikh family and  his father’s name is Tarsem Singh who is a farmer, while his mother, Balwinder Kaur, is a homemaker. Amritpal had completed his early education up to the 10th grade at a school in Pheruman, Amritsar, in 2008. He did a polytechnic course at Lord Krishna Polytechnic College in Kapurthala, Punjab. However, he did not complete the programme and later moved to Dubai to join his family’s transport business. ​

Amritpal Singh is from a small town in Amritsar, named Jallupur Khera. He moved to Dubai around 2012, working in his family’s transport business. In Dubai, he was active on social media especially Facebook where he used to discuss issues in Punjab.

Amritpal Singh got widely noticed in 2019, which was during farmer protests against India’s agricultural laws. He strongly supported the protests and also backed Deep Sidhu, a Punjabi actor‑turned‑activist, which helped his voice reach more people.

In August 2022, following Deep Sidhu’s death in a car accident, Amritpal had to return to India to take over the leadership of Waris Punjab De, an organization founded by Sidhu with the aim of fighting for social justice and preserving Punjab’s rights and culture. On September 29, 2022, during the first anniversary of the organization’s founding, Amritpal was officially appointed as its chief.

He has issued many statements in public in favour of Khalistan, stating, “Our dream of Khalistan shouldn’t be considered evil or taboo. It needs to be studied from an intellectual perspective to determine its geopolitical benefits. It’s an ideology, and ideologies never perish. We are not asking for it from Delhi.” In another comment, he declared the feeling of Khalistan will continue to exist among the people and no one could quell it. He even threatened Union Home Minister Amit Shah, declaring that he would suffer the same fate as Indira Gandhi, who was murdered by her Sikh bodyguards in 1984.
